Cunningham IRWIN, one son of John1 Irwin and Elizabeth Cunningham, was born 27 Jun 1827 in Clinton County, Kentucky, and married Elizabeth Ann MAXEY, daughter of Radford MAXEY and Susan HALSELL MAXEY of Monroe County, Kentucky in 1853. He died Jan 1879. Cunningham was a farmer who built a home on the Cumberland River in Horseshoe Bottom in Russell County, KY. He served in the Civil War - on the Union side.

A Russell County Lookup Volunteer found this information for me. (Thanks, Melissa!) Does anyone know who the Ellis woman and boy were? Later in that year, Sarah Ellis married in the home of Cunningham Irwin.

Stokes who being Duly sworn states her age is -- years and Post Office address Horse Shoe Bottom Russell Co KY and that she is well acquainted with and neighbor to the Claimant and ---? that, on the 6th day of March, 1879 the infant son of the claimant Elizabeth A Irwin was said to have died on this day, after he hauled the corpse of this infant to the graveyard at Jamestown and assisted in business burying it and further states he has no interest in this claim This September 14, 1886 Subscribed and sworn to before me by S.C. Stokes whom I certify to be respectable and fully entitled to credit on oath and I have no interest in this claim this September 14th 1886.

I, S.B. Maxey, a resident of Paris, Lamar County, Texas, being duly sworn state that in the year 1853 I resided in Clinton County, Kentucky, that I was thern and for many years had been acquainted with Cunningham Irwin who resided in the same County,; that I was also and had been acquainted with Elizabeth Maxey of Monroe County, Kentucky, from her childhood, daughter of my uncle Radford Maxey, that I was present at the wedding of said Cunningham Irwin and Elizabeth Maxey which occured as i now reccollect in the Spring of 1853, at the house of my said uncle in said Monroe County. I was married in July 1853, and this wedding occurred before mine, and as I recollect the Spring before. Rev. Josiah G. Harris, then of Clinton County Kentucky, now of Rio River County, Texas, performed the ceremony.

I knew said Irwin and wife were living together as man and wife so long as I lived in Kentucky. I moved from there in 1857 to ---? __? I know by family reports that they continued so to his wife(??) to his death. I am informed that his widow said Elizabeth Irwin is an applicant for pension by reason of his service. I have no interest whatever in this application. Paris, Texas, October 30th 1880. I should have stated that I was fifty five yrs old March 30th last.

In the matter of Elizabeth A Irwin Claimant for Pension as widow of Cunningham Irwin dec'd who as I am informed was a member of Co G12th KY Vol. personally appeared before me Craft Irwin Who being duly sworn states that he is a citizen of this above named County and State and that he is 56 years of age and that he was present when the said Cunningham Irwin and Elizabeth A irwin were married. and states that they legally married by Josiah G. Harris in the year 1853 at the Residence of Radford Maxey in Monroe County Ky, and states that he was well acquainted with said persons at the time they were married, and that the wifes name was Elizabeth Maxey before she married to the said Cunningham Irwin and states that they lived and cohabited together as man and wife after they were married and on up to the time of said CunnnghamÕs death as affiant is informed Affiant. States that he has no interest in this Claim and not concerned in its prosecution this 30th day of October A.D. 1880.

Blankenship who being duly sworn states her age is 26 years and Post office address Horseshoe Bottoms Russell County Ky and that she is well acquainted with the claimeant and has been all her life and that she is the Daughter of the claimant, and was present when her infant Brother John M Died. and he died in the arms of affiant on the 6th day of March 1879 in Russell County Ky, and affiant remembers the date by her ------------------ at the time(?) the fact of her uncle Frank Irwin, Setting down the date of death in her motherÕs Bible which entry was made on the 8th day of March 1879, and affiant states she has no interest in the prosecution of this claim, this October 22, 1886

Dunbar, Mr. Stokes, and her Daughter Lucetta which is all the proof that she has any knowledge of that she can get ---?. She respectfully asks of the Pension office is Satisfied that they will grant her a Pension at an early day.

Dowel Who being duly sworn according to law states that she resides in Russell County KY and that she is a Midwife and has been engaged in midwifery for thirty years Affiant states that She was present with and acted as midwife at the births of Elizabeth A. Irwin children who were Born at the following times and dates, Sarah L. Irwin was Born July 24th 1863 James F. Irwin was Born January 26th 1868. Gemima E. Irwin was Born april 10th 1870. Elizabeth G. Irwin was born april 11th 1873. John M. Irwin was Born May 17th 1876. all of which were Born in Russell County Ky,
Affiant states that said dates correspond with the record of the Family Bible of said Cunningham Irwin which is now in possession of his widow and which is now at hand and to which Affiant has access.
Affiant states that John M Irwin departed this life a short time ago and further states that she hans no Interest in this Claim directly nor indirectly and is not concerned in its posecution(??).

Coe who being duly sworn notes his age is 52 years and Post Office addres Horse Shoe Bottom Russell Co Ky and that he is well acquainted with the claimant and has lived near neighbor to her all the time since 1878 and states that he was present when an infant of Mrs. Irwin died from being choked to death by parched corn and said child was named John Maxey and he died in March 1879 but affiant cannot state the day of the month. Affiant sates, that he had the child in his arms just before it died endeavoring to relieve it and states that his memory, and recollection is distinct as far as this statement goes. and states he has no interest in this claim this September 14th 1886

Widow's Claim for Pension.

On this 8th day of March 1879, personally appeared before me, AC Wells Ck of Russell County court a Court of Record in and for the County and State aforesaid Elizabeth Ann Irwin a resident of Russell county in the County of Russell and State of Kentucky aged 49 years, who being duly sworn, makes the following declaration, in for to obtain the Pension provided by the Act of Congress approved JULY 14, 1862. that she is the widow of Cunningham Irwin who was a private in Company G commanded by Col Hoskins in the Regiment of 12th Ky Vol Inf in the War of 1861; that her maiden name was Maxey and that she was married to said Cunningham Irwin on or about the -day of the year 1853 at Record out at house(??) in the County of Monroe County KY and State of Kentucky by Rev. Josiah Harris and that she know of no record evidence of said marriage

She Further Declares that said Cunningham Irwin her husband died of disease contracted in service of the United States as aforesaid at Somerset in the State of Kentucky on or about January day of 1862 and there took diarrhea and took cold which settled on his lungs and kept getting worse til about March 1862 lingered antines(???) once, throwing up often all he would eat. died because of afflicted also of a kidney disease and became afflicted of his stomach and B--- ??? vomited. She also declares that she has remained a widow ever since the death of said Cunningham Irwin and that she has not in any manner been engaged in, or aided or abetted, the rebellion in the United States; and she hereby appoints M---Achilles Wilson of Jamestown Russell County KY as her lawful Attorney, with power of substitution, and authorizes Him to present and prosecute this claim, and to receive her pension certificates. The following are the names dates of birth and place of residence of all the children of her deceased husband who were under sixteen years of age at the time of his death Sarah Lewis Irwin was born (??) born July 24 in 1863, James H. Irwin born January 26, 1868, jemima e. Irwin born April 10th 1870, Elizabeth G. Irwin born April 11th 1873, John M. Irwin born may 17th 1876 all born in Russell County KY. (Note in Margin Said Cunningham Irwin died in Russell County Ky ...26th day of January 1878

It appears from the Rolls on file in this Office that Cunningham Irwin was enrolled on the 15th day of Oct., 1861, at pulaski Co, KY in Co., G 12th Regiment of Ky. Volunteers, to serve 3 years or during the war and mustered into service as a 1st Ser't on the 30th day of Jan'y, 1862, at Clio, Ky., in Co., G, 12th Regiment of Ky. Volunteers, to serve 3 years, or during the war. On the Muster Roll of Co., G of that Regiment, from enrollment to April 30th, 1862, he is reported present. May & June 1862, absent - Discharged as 1st Serg't May 10th, 1862.
Cert. of Disability reports him dischd at Camp on Mud Creed- May 4th 1862, which date is accepted as correct. I am, sir, very resprecfully,

These names and dates are from a xeroxed page of handwritten names and birthdates of Cunningham IRWIN, Elizabeth IRWIN and their children and Cunningham's parents found in the effects of "Little Lillie" Reynolds who was taken in by Jemima E. Irwin Blankenship and her family. SOURCE: My father was given this from two of his Blankenship cousins, Russell Springs, KY 9-13-1992. Lillie Reynolds, daughter of Sarah/Sallie Irwin and John Reynolds, lived with Jemima E. Irwin (Big Lily) Blankenship and her family. She and Jemima would later live with Margie Blankenship who would care for them in their later years.

From a list in a Bible owned by M. Blankenship who kept and took care of "Big Lily" and "Little Lily" after moving from Horse Shoe Bottom.
